History of the Academy begins from 1960 when at the East Siberian State Academy of Culture and Arts there was opened East Siberian Library Institute, fourth of the higher educational institutions of culture in Russia.
Though it was named libririan, but its structure with the librian faculty was added by culture enlightening work faculty.
Opening of the institute played an important role in cultural and scientific life of Buryatia and all Eastern Siberia and North.
Peoples of Siberia, Far East and Near North had a possibility to train their staff of higher qualification for the institutions of culture.
From the very beginning there came help from Moscow and Leningrad institutes of culture. with their help there was made fundemental library. they helped scientific pedagogical staff. In the institute there were organized Moscow and Leningrad scientific schools.
Here worked well-known scientists D.A Goldshtein, N.S. Kartashov, V.K. Kreidenko, I.G. Morgenshtern.Staff of teachers and workers keeps glorified traditions layed by the authorities L.A. Broitman,А.М.Gershtein, V.P. Krasnobaev,

In 1964 the institute was renamed into East Siberian State Institute of Culture, and in 1995 got status of Academy

Today ESSACA is one of the leading educational institutions among the institutes of culture of Russian Federation,
recognized scientific methodic center of Eastern Siberia in the sphere of training staff in the sphere of culture and arts.
Social economical peculiarities of the region, distance from the center, great geographic space and and poli-ethnic population
define the role of the institution as educational, intellectual,пределяют значимость вуза как образовательного and cultural center for training specialists
for all the spheres of arts and culture. The institution has significant experience, data, technologies to study cultures of West, East and North defining its self existence and has activities,makes it possible successfully
realize programs of scientific researches, training staff.
The Academy trains staff of higher qualification for Buryatia Republic, Saha(Yakutia), Kalmikia, Mountainous Altai,
Hakasia, regions of Chita and Irkutsk, Aginsk and Ust-Ordinsk autonomous districts, teaches students from Mongolia, China, Turkland, South Korea, France foreign languages
At the Academy 6000 are taught. Training is on all forms of training.
Educational process, scientific research and creative activity are provided by high qualified scientific
pedagogical staff with suffiecent potential and ability to solve modern problems on training speciallists on the profile of the institution.
The structure of the Academy has 2 Institutes, 6 faculties, 36 departments, postgraduate courses on 4 scientific specialites, dissertation
councils, international department, publisher's department, scientific laboratories, Opera studia, student's theatres, Educational Academical complex of culture and arts and socio-cultural technologies of Eastern Siberia and North.
ESSACA has its own sport health camp on the shore of lake Baikal.
Branches of ESSACA successfully trains specialists in Irkutsk, Kizil, Chita.
Graduates of the Academy today define strategy and tactic of tourism development, professional
art and traditional ethnic arts, management of economy in all the spheres. They make industry of leisure and rest for children and adults, making conditions for development of their creativity, working out different forms of
busieness and enterprising for making foundations to develop their creativity, work out mechanisms of all forms of busieness and enterprising for the future when culture and art
will be considered as important componenets of the real sector of economy.
FGOU VPO of ESSACA is a winner of All Russia's competition"Window into Russia" in the nomination "Best institute of arts" (1999г.).В 2002 the Academy
was awarded golden medal of France(SPI),given international prize "Crustal iceberg" (Scandinavian countries)-
за quality of training specialists.The ninth size star of the constellation Acqurius was named in honour of the Academy. In 2004 the Institution was rewarded by the medal "Best employer of the year".
